Rudolph Giuliani, a controversial politician known for chasing down mobsters, slashing welfare rolls and jeering at the press, has emerged as a big-hearted hero of the city, credited with lifting spirits and organizing tireless recovery efforts following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
On September 11, two hijacked jetliners crash into the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, killing thousands, including hundreds of firefighters and police, and causing massive economic and emotional shock waves that reverberate throughout the country. Giuliani emerges as one of the city's heroes, handling the crisis with grit and aplomb. He visits the debris site, organizes the rescue and cleanup operations and keeps the public informed and inspired through news conferences and interviews.
Giuliani's current popularity goes far beyond New York. He recently became the first mayor in 50 years to address the U.N. General Assembly.
In New York's darkest hour, Giuliani became one of its shining lights, showing that he has much more to give to the city.
"Since the catastrophe, he has exerted the leadership which he's always had. What was different was that he was sensitive and warm and compassionate and showed nuances with respect to emotion that he never showed before," said Ed Koch, a former New York mayor and Giuliani rival.
